Madeira has never been known for its beaches, on the contrary to its neighbour island of Porto Santo. On this island the golden sandy beach is stretching nine kilometres along most of the south coast. In Madeira just a few beaches are present, and most of them are pebble beaches. The sandy beach is made of black basalt sand. There are however some new artificial beaches made from sand imported from Morocco. One is in Calheta and the other is in Machico.
In Seixal however, we are blessed with two sand beaches. One is just below the house, just next to the harbour, two minutes from the house.
The other one, a great beach is located at the other side of the village. Go for the direction of Porto Moniz. Just as you leave the village, there is a road turning right along the sea. In the end of this road you will find a parking, changing cabins, toilets, a kiosk and a bar for refreshments, shower and a nice sandy beach. It is worth a swim.
In The south coast, the nearest sandy beaches is Praia Formosa near Funchal and Prainha in Caniçal.
However, going down the road from the house, take the descend down to the pebbled beach below the statue of Cristo Rei. It has full service with sun beds and restaurant.
