Villa Echium is named after the Madeiran bush, Pride of Madeira, or Maçaroco in Portuguese. It gives a beautiful blue flower and is growing abundantly around the island. In the garden of Villa Echium you can find it behind the pond.
Friends and guests have asked me why a garden pond and not a swimming pool. Well, I do not know. I suppose that it is easier to keep a self sustaining pond with fish, turtles, frogs and water lilies, than a pool. The frogs make their evening calls and keep the pond free from mosquitoes. They are nice to listen to. On the other hand, why have a pool when it is not far to get to the sea from the house. Just down the road you find the Garajau beach. You can walk or drive down to the pebble beach, or take a cable car. Down at the beach, you can walk around the Garajau cliff. You can get sun beds at the swimming complex, or you can go diving. If you want refreshments or a meal, try the restaurant.
Other beaches are found in Caniço. Down there you have several pool complexes, beaches and a promenade. There are also a lot of restaurants and several bars. Even a couple of gyms are available, one at O Galo and one at Rocamar.
Back to the house and its garden. The Villa is divided in two separate luxury apartments, one one bedroom apartment and one 2 bedroom apartment. Both the self catering apartments have complete kitchens, bath rooms with showers, dining rooms and lounges. The upper apartment, ground level from the street, has two bedrooms with double beds. This is fit for someone with walking handicap. The lower apartment has one bed room with a double bed and a dressing room where we sometimes put in an extra roller bed.
Filomena comes every day but Sundays and holidays. She cleans the apartments and keeps the garden. If you want to use the grill, please tell her. There are outside tables and chairs in the garden and on the terrace where it is nice to eat in good weather.
In the garden there are palm trees and other exotic trees, flowers like strelitzias and orchids.
